Salacca is a delicious, high yield, fruiting, short-stemmed palm native to Indonesia. Its fruit has a scaly snake skin-like appearance with a crunchy apple-like texture and a sugary pineapple flavor. Due to the dense foliage and sharp spines, Salacca palms are commonly used as impenetrable privacy hedge.
Salak was named snake fruit due to its reddish-brown snake-like skin. It also goes by many popular names such as edible salacca, salak palm, snake palm, and snake-skinned fruit.
Snake fruit can be eaten raw. It is usually eaten fresh, and the flesh is sweet and slightly acidic. Some people also use it in salads, desserts, and smoothies.
